Merry Happy Whatever
Season 01, 08 Episodes

merry happy whatever

Synopsis

“A strong-willed patriarch must balance the demands of his complicated family with the stress of the Christmas season when his youngest daughter comes home for the holidays with a new boyfriend.” (via IMDb)

My Review

I know it’s way past the season but, I couldn’t not include Merry Happy Whatever in this round-up.

Watching the Quinn family through their holiday traditions during the month of December was such a joy! Every single character was so quirky, fun, and lovable– especially the two in-laws. I laughed out loud countless times and definitely shed a few tears, too. The episodes went by quickly but, there was so much jam-packed into each one; every single minute was entertaining.

My heart was filled with warmth and all the Christmas spirit at the end of this series. Hopefully, they’ll come back to celebrate with 8 more episodes next year! I would be all for it.

Atypical
Season 03, 10 Episodes

rsz_atypical

Synopsis

“Atypical is a coming of age story that follows Sam (played by Keir Gilchrist), a 19-year-old on the autism spectrum as he searches for love and independence. While Sam is on his funny and emotional journey of self-discovery, the rest of his family must grapple with change in their own lives as they all struggle with the ongoing central theme of the series: what does it really mean to be normal? In season three, Sam starts his first year of college and is faced with the challenge of figuring out what success means for him, while adjusting to the changes that come with growing up.” (via Rotten Tomatoes)

My Review

I love Casey, Sam’s sister, I really do but, I wish Season 03 had focused less on her. Her story line irked me and the actress who plays her friend Izzy was hard to watch. Her crying scenes made me seriously cringe.

Sam and Paige are always my favorite and that didn’t change but, Elsa (the mom) truly won my heart with her scenes this time around, too– especially with the plants.

As this series progresses, I fall more and more in love with the characters and the episodes just keep getting better. I am crossing my fingers and toes that they’ll be returning for another season!

United States of Tara
Seasons 01-03, 36 Episodes

united states of tara

Synopsis

“A woman struggles to find a balance between her dissociative identity disorder and raising a dysfunctional family.” (via IMDb)

My Review

The ending of the very last episode had me so confused, all of the answers were, mostly, given to us but, I didn’t feel like we got enough closure. There should’ve been more… or maybe, I am just not able to accept it’s over? I freakin’ miss Tara, her alters, and her family, okay? I’ll admit that the first season was a lot more action-packed than the second one but, the third one made up for that completely. I wish it could’ve ran for longer!

The entire Gregson family had my whole heart– their love for each other was beautiful. The way they always had Tara’s, and each other’s backs, it made me melt. They weren’t perfect and there were times I got upset with each one of them but, that’s what makes a good show good, right?

The humor and witty jokes had me cracking up and the hard hitting moments got me teary-eyed. The episodes are only thirty minutes but, somehow, I became attached as if it were an hour long one.

Glee
Season 01, 22 Episodes

glee

Synopsis

“A group of ambitious misfits try to escape the harsh realities of high school by joining a glee club.” (via IMDb)

My Review

Watching the second season of Glee now, I am missing the first one.

In Season 01, I really enjoyed following each character, getting to know more about them, their personal struggles, and their home lives. Each episode’s plot carried into the next one and all of the songs/performances made sense for what was going on. There may have been lesser known songs featured but, there was more heart and more story. If only they had continued this way instead of making full music videos, that have nothing to do with anyone, and letting them take over the entire hour.

    1. Merry Happy Whatever was a super cute series! ❀ I need to rewatch Gossip Girl one of these days, too. I remember loving it as a teenager. Did you ever read the books? Thank you for stopping by Anna! ❀

    1. Oh my gosh, I love that, we really do watch the same shows. I re-watched all of the Boy Meets World episodes last year on Hulu, too!! ❀ One of my favorites, forever!!

  3. My recommendation is not a tv show, but a Youtuber… have you seen Kristen Leanne? She’s a cruelty free make up Youtuber and she has a 2nd channel dedicated to her animals. She’s fun to watch and figured since you use cruelty free products, you might like her. πŸ™‚

  4. I got Disney + so, The Simpsons.

I actually liked the first episode of Atypical, but couldn’t keep watching it after learning that the autistim community found it damaging.

I mean, if there was a show about a deaf person poorly portrayed by an actor who isn’t deaf, and the show further perpetuates misconceptions about deafness, it *would* harm me (eg. The misconceptions about deaf people being lipreading pros come from tv and movies.) Too bad hearing people can’t ever tell the difference as they’ve had very limited (if any) interaction with a deaf person, so they get really defensive and combative whenever we say anything about those portrayals.

Anyway, that’s why I removed Atypical from my watch list.

    1. The Simpsons is on Disney+? Lol I feel like you are joking with me, right? I can’t tell. πŸ˜‚

That’s so sad to hear that some of the autism the community find the show damaging. I actually hadn’t heard that about it & it makes me not really want to give it my views anymore. On the other hand, another fellow blogger friend of mine has a son on the spectrum & she really enjoys watching it. She said that the siblings remind her of her own kids.

I totally understand why you’ve removed it from your watch list!

      1. If you’re curious, here’s a post about the show written by an autistic person: https://crippledscholar.com/2017/08/25/no-bad-tv-portrayals-of-disability-are-not-good-learning-opportunities/

I *hated* how my mother made herself an authority on deafness, particularly since she thought I should be grateful for any scraps that were thrown my way, and did not interact with any deaf adult when I was young. But! I’m not going to get into that discussion on here! The link is there for you if you’re curious.

On a lighter note, I AM NOT SHITTING YOU: ALL 30 SEASONS OF THE SIMPSONS IS AVAILABLE ON DISNEY +!

        1. Thank you for the link, I will definitely read it & decide if I’ll continue watching from there before the next season is released. I am sorry your mother made herself an authority on deafness & that you hated it. I have learned a lot from reading your blog. πŸ’Ÿ Thank you for always making me more aware.

I cannot believe The Simpsons is on Disney+. WTF? πŸ˜‚

  5. I watched Glee back in the day except maybe the last few seasons because eventually I got bored with it.

The other shows you reviewed sounds really good.

As for me, I’m trying to talk myself into watching SOMETHING before I get started with S3 of AHS.

I did watch a movie on the weekend. Always Be My Maybe on Netflix. It was cute.

    1. Ah that’s so sad to hear it gets boring. 😭 I really think you’d like United States of Tara!! I am a Toni Collette fan girl now. & if I had seasons of AHS to watch, I’d never watch anything else lol. My little brother told me to watch Always Be My Maybe too! I’m gonna have to sometime.

    1. Whaaat? I keep hearing about this show but, I had no idea it was about crime documentaries. Thank you for letting me know, Amielle! I’m gonna have to check it out!

  6. I tried sooooo hard to watch Merry Happy Whatever but I immediately hated the laugh track and I didn’t find it funny at all. Maybe I need to watch the full pilot episode and decide for good but…..idk haha
Omfg I love Sam and Paige’s chemistry on screen, absolutely perfect. And yeah, Elsa won me over a bit too lol. I really hope for a 4th season!!
I’ll look into United States of Tara, because I had never heard of it until you mentioned that you started watching it.
I’m personally not a huge fan of musicals so I would most likely pass on Glee lol

    1. Oh my gosh, laugh tracks bother me a lot sometimes, too but I guess I was able to ignore it in Merry Happy Whatever. The jokes are really cheesy & the show altogether is probably too corny/predictable for you lol. πŸ˜›

Ugh, Paige is so funny & I love her & Sam together. ❀ I hated Elsa in the past but, she finally won my heart/I finally understood her.

United States of Tara is really good but possibly a bad representation of DID. I enjoyed it so much, though.

Lol yeah, you would prob hate Glee, tbh.

      Liked by 1 person

      1. Lol it’s funny because ever since I noticed the laugh track on MHW, I noticed it when I started watching HIMYM again and i was like “omg I’ve been able to ignore it this whole time I’ve been watching” haha
Yes! Exactly! I think Elsa’s character really had some growth! I really loved how she expressed herself while taking care of Page’s plants lol.
I looked it up and yeah it seems funny.

        Liked by 1 person

        1. It seems like some laugh tracks are harder to ignore. I tried watching the show Baby Daddy & could NOT stand it but the show was pretty good! I wish I could’ve watched more.

Lol yesss! Elsa was so cute about the plants. ❀
