My Mini Review + Favorite Quotes From… The Art of French Kissing by Brianna R. Shrum

Title: The Art of French Kissing
Author: Brianna R. Shrum
Original Publication Date: June 05, 2018
Genre(s): Contemporary, Young Adult, Romance

Goodreads Synopsis: Seventeen-year-old Carter Lane has wanted to be a chef since she was old enough to ignore her mom’s warnings to stay away from the hot stove. And now she has the chance of a lifetime: a prestigious scholarship competition in Savannah, where students compete all summer in Chopped style challenges for a full-ride to one of the best culinary schools in the country. The only impossible challenge ingredient in her basket: Reid Yamada.

After Reid, her cute but unbearably cocky opponent, goes out of his way to screw her over on day one, Carter vows revenge, and soon they are involved in a full-fledged culinary war. Just as the tension between them reaches its boiling point, Carter and Reid are forced to work together if they want to win, and Carter begins to wonder if Reid’s constant presence in her brain is about more than rivalry. And if maybe her desire to smack his mouth doesn’t necessarily cancel out her desire to kiss it.

My Mini Review

It’s hard to thoroughly enjoy a book when you’re a fan of the side characters but, not so much the main one. Riya and Will were my favorite story line and Reid was pretty cool but, Carter? I couldn’t stand her! She was always so unsure of herself, even at the very end. Her actions didn’t match her thoughts and I couldn’t get her personality to go with the way her looks were described.

I was hoping for more about the cooking competition and less of the constantly going over the repetitive worries she had. I also thought I was going into an innocent Young Adult but, this read more like a Romance (just with 17 year olds). There was nothing rude or over-the-top… but, there were definitely some sexier parts. I wasn’t expecting any of it and it should’ve been completely left out. The scenes added nothing to the story.

I liked the ending but, this novel was worse than predictable… it was boring.

My Rating: 2 out of 5
Dates Read: March 22-April 04, 2019

My Favorite Quotes

“I let my head drop into my hands, because sometimes excitement feels like terror.”

“I bet they all write sonnets to butter and caramelized onions in their sleep. They all get heart eyes for macarons and flutters in their stomachs for a perfectly braised lamb shank. These are my people.

“Man, I hate having a conscience; life would be so much simpler if we could just be done with them altogether when we needed to be.”

“Now I’m terrified to want to win, because wanting is just this side of hoping, and wanting things is stupid, because most things I want, I do not get, and that’s been okay.”

“Impatience never made an artist.”

  1. I love your honest reviews Hunida, the way you said this book was boring got me πŸ˜‚πŸ˜‚ It sounds like a pretty basic teen read to me, but the cooking competition concept definitely adds a little something fun and different to it! Thanks for sharing your thoughts Hunida!

    1. LOL thank you, Jennie! I expected it to be cliche & predictable but, yeah, the cooking competition should have livened the story up more than it did. πŸ˜›

  2. You write the best reviews!

I want to know how and or why you stick with a book that is boring. I can’t do it. Like yesterday I was trying to read a book and it was so boring the words just become letters on a page and my eyes glaze over and I can’t even read a sentence at a time. It’s like my brain just turns off and says “Nope. Can’t.”

I hate that book title!!!!! All this time I thought you were reading a non-fiction, how-to. ROFLMAO

    1. Thank you, Jinjer! πŸ™‚

I don’t know how or why I stick to books I think are boring, either. πŸ˜› I’m always thinking I can just push through until the end but then yeah it takes me forever to actually finish the book because my eyes glaze over & my brain turns off, too. I even repeatedly exclaim “I hate this book!” after reading sessions sometimes but I still don’t put the book away?? I don’t know what is wrong with me.

LOL I did have a giggle when you asked me if I was trying out each chapter after reading them. πŸ˜‰

  3. Omg I would have thought and expected the same out of this book. I would have loved for it to have more about culinary etc. How boring lol. Not worth it if the supporting characters are better than the main protagonist lmao

  4. I know I said this before but I love reading your book reviews! 😁 I used to work at a book store and I was so “up” on everything out there…now I have no idea what books there are lol. I love YA but there are weird ones out there that say are YA because the characters are teens but it is more of an adult book. I think they need to create some different YA categories πŸ€”

    1. Aw thank you, I’m so happy you enjoy them! πŸ˜€ Working at a book store sounds so fun! There are SO many books, it really is hard to keep up with them all. & YES! They definitely need to come up with a new YA category for these weird ones so I can stay away from them. I like romance & I don’t even mind sex language but… in a YA… it seems a bit odd!

    1. Really? I feel like I haven’t been reading a lot of books at all this year. 😦 I usually just read ebooks on my phone. Physical copies are heavy & I fall asleep during audio books lol.

  5. I’m so sorry to hear you didn’t love this book so much – it sounded like such a promising story, but it’s so frustrating when you just can’t stand the main character and… well, I laughed while reading your last sentence, a boring book is never good ahah. I hope you’ll love your next read better! ❀

    1. The synopsis really got me, it sounded much more exciting than it really was. I was trying to change my mind on the main character the whole time but I just couldn’t stand her lol.

Glad I could give you a little a giggle. ❀ Thank you for stopping by!!

  6. I’m not the biggest fan of romance, but I like YA & cooking competitions. It’s good to know the book is more about Carter’s worries & the romance so I’ll definitely be adding it to my do not read list!
