Chicken Karahi (Pakistani Chicken Curry)

My Review: We really didn’t like this. The chicken wasn’t cooked well at all, it did that weird squeaky noise when I chewed it. I hate that texture. The sauce was pretty flavorless, too. The best things to eat were the tomatoes and jalapenos but… those are always good.

We Served It With: Jasmine rice

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 Tbsp oil
  • 1 inch fresh ginger, peeled and minced (or 1/4 tsp dry, ground ginger)
  • 2 garlic cloves, peeled and minced
  • 1 lb chicken breast, cut into bite sized pieces
  • 3 tomatoes, diced (roughly 3 c)
  • 2-4 green chilies, seeded and chopped (Serrano or Jalapeno)
  • 1 tsp cumin
  • 1 tsp chili powder
  • 1 tsp salt
  • ½ tsp red pepper flakes
  • ½ tsp turmeric
  • 2 Tbsp fresh cilantro, chopped

My Review: Yum! I had never heard of Currywurst before but, I am a new fan after trying this recipe! There were so many different spices that I wasn’t expecting to mix so nicely together. Like curry powder and tomato sauce? Huh? My only complaint is that the sauce could’ve cooked longer to absorb the spices better, it was a little gritty at first but not the next day when reheated.

We Served It With: A deli sandwich roll

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 2 Tbs. canola or sunflower oil (we used EVOO)
  • 1 med. onion, finely chopped
  • 2 1/2 Tbs. curry powder
  • 2 Tbs. paprika
  • 2 cups tomato sauce
  • 1/4 cup sugar
  • 1/4 cup red wine vinegar
  • salt, to taste
  • 8 Bratwurst, cooked and sliced

My Review: I am sure you don’t have to use all Simple Truth Organic stuff in this chili like the ingredients say but, we actually always buy that brand so we coincidentally ended up doing so. Though, I don’t recommend this recipe anyways. It was quite underwhelming. There was no punch to it and the broth was a weird almost chalky texture… the internet is filled with chili recipes that are 10x better.

Ingredients You’ll Need:

  • 1 lb. Simple Truth Organic ground beef
  • 1 organic onion, diced
  • 1 organic green bell pepper, diced
  • 1 (15 ounce) can Simple Truth Organic diced tomatoes
  • 1 (15 ounce) can Simple Truth Organic tomato sauce
  • 2 tablespoons cumin
  • 2 tablespoons chili powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon cayenne pepper
  • 1⁄2 teaspoon paprika
  • 1 can organic chiles, hot
  • 1 (15 ounce) can Simple Truth Organic chili beans, drained but not rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can Simple Truth Organic black beans, drained but not rinsed
  • 1 (15 ounce) can Simple Truth Organic pinto beans, drained but not rinsed

  1. Wow that currywurst and chili look good.

I love Indian chicken curry but on your recommendation, I won’t be trying the Pakistani chicken curry.

I guess a country whose intelligence service originally put the Taliban in power in Afghanistan and then hid Osama bin Laden for 10 years is incapable of producing a good chicken curry.

    1. The currywurst was delightful but I’ve tried better chilis in the past. 😉

I also love Indian chicken curry! This was my first time trying Pakistani curry though I wouldn’t say all of the country’s cuisine is bad! Maybe the recipe just wasn’t the best?

  2. I hate that squeaky chicken sound!!!!!

I found out through a friend that the reason we can’t make curry taste like the curry we get at restaurants and want to recreate at home in our own kitchens is because they actually use curry blocks. Look for Vermont Curry blocks at your grocery or on Amazon. I haven’t tried it yet myself because I JUST learned about this. But I’m going to.

Anyway, doesn’t sound like any of your three recipes this week were winners. I’m very sorry about that. They all sounded tasty. WTF????

    1. Me too, me too!! It’s the worst. 😦 Oh that’s interesting!! You’ll have to let me know how the curry blocks are. I worry they are filled with MSG though?

The currywurst was pretty good but, none that were really true winners! 😛

    1. The currywurst was really tasty! I’d love to try another recipe of it. 🙂 Maybe you could try the chicken karahi curry in a vegan way? Like fake chicken or something?

I’d love to try more Pakistani recipes, too! Fingers crossed my next round of recipe reviews goes a little better. 😉

  3. Ooh I have never heard of Currywurst before, but that sounds & looks amazing!! What a great idea to combine curry & tomato. Also I totally agree, that squeaky chicken texture is the worst and makes me cringe just thinking about it, lol.

    1. I think the Currywurst is a German thing. 🙂 It was really unique & tasty! & Oh my gosh, I’m so glad people are getting me about the squeaky chicken LOL. I thought I sounded crazy but I was like “no it can’t just be me!” hahah.

      1. I taste all kinds of horrors, but yes, soap describes it very well 😀 Can’t even stand the smell of it.
A colleague of mine (who sat next to me) opened her lunchbox and i told her she needs to leave and eat that thing in the kitchen or else… 😀

  4. None of these this time around really seem like my cup of tea. I do like chili though, but I like mine to be more thick. It’s also good if you add some cheese and sour cream (and even jalapenos :P) and use it has a dip for some tortilla chips. Mmm.

    1. I agree! Thick chili is so much better. I cannot eat cheese or sour cream but when I was able to… I would pile it all on!! Also some raw red onions. 😉

I hope there will be a dish that catches your eye in the next round of recipes!

  5. Omg, the currywurst reminds me of meatball marinara at subway? and ahhhh, yum!!! I love that you still keep recipe reviews going (sorry, I’ve been gone for awhile!) because i love reading and looking at the food pictures! A pity the Pakistani curry and chili didn’t taste good because i personally LOVE curry although it sounded more like there was a problem with the chicken rather than the recipe?

    1. Nooo, it tastes so different than a meatball marinara but they do look a bit similar, huh?! I’m gonna post another recipe reviews today!! There are so many recipes on the internet to try I don’t think I’ll stop for awhile!! 🙂 SO nice to hear from you, by the way!! ❤

The Pakistani curry didn't really have enough sauce or flavor but yes, the chicken was the main problem!
