Reviewing Some Films I Watched #6 (Special HORROR Edition)

Halloween is not too long from now!!

I’ve been feeling extra spooky all month long by cozying up to these horror films:

The Midnight Man (2016)

midnight man

IMDb Synopsis:

“A girl and her friends find a game in the attic that summons a creature known as The Midnight Man, who uses their worst fears against them.”

My Review: You will be shouting at your screen the whole time you watch this one. It’s one of those “how could they be so dumb?!” kind of films; all of the characters are complete morons. It’s ridiculous some of the things they get themselves into but, I guess that’s the thrill of it. The grandma was terrifying and the concept of The Midnight Man is a good one. The ending wasn’t what I was expecting at all though it was very clever. Everything seemed too rushed yet, not enough happened.

My Rating: 2.5 out of 5
Watched It On: Hulu

Children of the Corn (1984)

children of the corn.jpeg

IMDb Synopsis:

A young couple is trapped in a remote town where a dangerous religious cult of children believe everyone over the age of 18 must be killed.”

My Review: Malachai was a total trip and a half, he scared the crap out of me every time he was on the screen. The boyfriend was an idiot (of course) but, I still liked him for his heroic-ness. The girlfriend was at least a little smarter– I liked that she balanced it out so they weren’t always losing to the children. The whole cult and how it became was super interesting to piece together. I couldn’t imagine what I would do if I was The Couple! The ending actually caught me by surprise. I enjoyed this one so much I didn’t even mind the hilariously horrible CGI it was a super freaky film!!

My Rating: 4 out of 5
Watched It On: Hulu

The Tortured (2010)

tortured

IMDb Synopsis:

An upper-middle-class couple’s life is destroyed when their only child is kidnapped and killed. Obsessed with revenge, the couple seizes an opportunity to kidnap the killer.”

My Review: I’ve loved Jesse Metcalf since his time in the soap opera Passions (please, tell me I wasn’t the only one who watched that? Anybody?), I remember him banging Eva Longoria in Desperate Housewives, and getting too sensitive as John Tucker. All of those roles were quite similar though so I was interested to see him cast here in a completely different setting. He absolutely nailed it!! His emotions were so strong, they were bursting through the screen, and I felt so much pain for him. His wife bothered me a little bit in the beginning but, I was rooting them both on the entire time— I was constantly cringing and peeking through my fingers but, I didn’t want them to stop. I honestly wanted them to do more than they did… the ending is a very satisfying one with a nice little twist that definitely shocked me.

My Rating: 3.5 out of 5
Watched It On: Netflix

Tragedy Girls (2017)

tragedy girls

IMDb Synopsis:

“A twist on the slasher genre, following two death-obsessed teenage girls who use their online show about real-life tragedies to send their small mid-western town into a frenzy, and cement their legacy as modern horror legends.”

My Review: Whoa, whoa, whoa. The Tragedy Girls are insane! I was completely and utterly blown away by this film. It was so incredibly sick but, somehow made me laugh more often than I should have. My jaw was constantly droppingΒ andΒ I couldn’t stop cracking up. The two girls were just fabulous; it was hard for me not to love them and want protection for them. Their obsession with likes and followers was scary but, perfectly mirrored teens in today’s world.

My Rating: 5 out of 5
Watched It On: Hulu

Bedeviled (2016)

bedeviled

IMDb Synopsis:

“Five friends are terrorized by a supernatural entity after downloading a mysterious app.”

My Review: There was so much more potential that could have been reached here. I loved loved loved the concept but, I only jumped once. I needed more loud noises and longer monster scenes. The ending was really good and had my heart racing a million miles per hour but, the rest of the film was rather slow and boring. It could have been so much better in so many different ways!!

My Rating: 3 out of 5

    1. Oh! I watched the first half of the Gerald’s Game film… I can’t remember much though & never watched the ending lol. Maybe I’ll have to go back to that one!!

    1. It was terribly creepy! I saw there is a second one, have you seen it? Do you recommend?

  1. I’ve seen Children of the Corn. I’m always disappointed with Stephen King adaptations because they always come out cheesy. The books are just so much creepier. The remake of IT was amazing and I saw that they’re remaking Pet Semetary, which I’m super excited about. I wish they would remake The Shining and make it more like the book. The book was creepy as hell!

    1. I’ve honestly never read a Stephen King novel. πŸ˜› I did see the remake of IT and thought it was really good!! & the Pet Semetary ones have always scared me!! I bet the remake will be awesome. I’ve never seen The Shining but I saw it was on Netflix!

  2. I’ve always wanted to see Children of the Corn because Stephen King is one of my favorite authors and the movie is based off of his short story with the same name! Just haven’t gotten around to it yet, unfortunately.

    1. There’s Children of the Corn 2 & 3, too! I wonder if they’re any good or if they’re all pretty much the same?!

Yes!! That’s the perfect way to describe Tragedy Girls! Weird & strangely enjoyable! It had so much more gore than I expected but, I loved it!! Hope you like it, too, if you watch it!! πŸ˜€

  5. My lady and I watched all 3 Child’s Play movies recently. I use to be deathly afraid of Chucky as a child, but now I see how ridiculous he is as an adult. Haha!
I still keep the night light lit just in case he’s in the hallway though πŸ˜‚πŸ˜œ

    1. Oh my gosh! I know Chucky is ridiculous… sure. But he’s still goddamn scary, right?! I can’t stand that little guy. I never sleep in the dark either hahahaha.

  6. I was just thinking I need to watch a horror movie or something today- I’ve been slacking on the “getting in the spirit”. It’s just been so busy- wahhh. But maybe for my run today I’ll put something on. Have you watched the Haunting of Hill House on Netflix? I’ve heard good things about it! (I have talked to a few people about it, so don’t mind me if I already mentioned it hahah)

    1. Don’t tell anyone but, I’m already done with Halloween, I’ve had enough horror movies… & I already watched a Christmas one a couple days ago. πŸ˜€ heheh.

Oh no worries, we haven’t talked about Haunting of Hill House show yet!! I’ve also heard so many good things about it but haven’t taken the time to watch it yet! Let me know what you think if you get to it!

      1. hahah. Girl, I don’t blame ya. I was sooo in the holiday spirit at the beginning of October, but school got intense and now I’m just feeling over it all too! And SO ready for Christmas season!!!

We are loving it right now! Only on episode three, but it’s really great!

  7. Only seen Children of the Corn… I was like 10 and just thinking about it creeps me out. It’s funny because I went out with friends and they talked about how they would never do a cornmaze after that movie and I just laughed.

    1. Children of the Corn was super creepy!! & Tragedy Girls was really millennial central & even though the whole “followers obsessed” thing is overdone; they made it unique & super interesting!!
