Reviewing Some Films I Watched #3

Don’t Hang Up (2016)

My Review: Don’t Hang Up was a trip and a half. These friends have a hobby of making prank phone calls and of course, it backfires on them when someone prank calls them back. I was kept on the edge of my seat throughout this entire film, I’ll give it that. I was annoyed by the fact that they kept going back and forth from the professional camera to their own personal cameras; kind of like a Blair Witch Project effect (but, it wasn’t effective). The actors were more believable as the film went on, they genuinely seemed terrified. They’re both made to be completely untrustworthy and pretty dickish but, there’s no doubt you will still root for them to survive. I thought the ending was genius and really, the whole story line was impressive. There was one part about the ending that didn’t sit well with me but, I won’t say because I don’t want to give too much away.

IMDb Synopsis:

“An evening of some drunken prank calls becomes a nightmare for a pair of teenagers when a mysterious stranger turns their own game against them…with deadly consequences.”

The Girl Next Door (2007)

My Rating: 4.5/5

My Review: Oh, you guys. I read the synopsis of this and immediately clicked “play.” It didn’t say anywhere that this was based on a true story so I didn’t know until I saw it displayed across the screen in the beginning credits. The most fucked up films are the ones based on real, true events because the shit these fucked up people actually do is 1000x times worse than anyone else could possibly imagine. After watching this, I woke up in the middle of the night and stayed up for honestly, a few hours just thinking about how horrible Ruth was. I couldn’t get it out of my head, I felt so much pain and sympathy for Meg and Susan. This case is told from the POV of the neighbor Davy; which is interesting. I liked him… he was sweet and cute… and yes, he was also really brave but, I can’t help but feel he could have been even braver and maybe just a bit smarter… there’s so much more he could have done. I understand he was scared and young but, gosh. He frustrated me! And I do have to warn ya to not watch this if you have a weak stomach. The events portrayed in this film are seriously horrific– words cannot express how much so. I found myself repeatedly shielding my eyes and hiding behind boyfriend’s shoulder. The worst part is: Ruth isn’t just bad all on her own, she has 3 insanely naughty boys who willingly help her in the abuse of Meg and Susan. My heart broke and my throat closed up at the ending but, I did feel quite a bit of satisfaction with some parts of it. I’ll have to read the book and the real life case to judge this film more fairly but, only having watched this and it being the first time I’ve heard of the case, I have to say: The Girl Next Door was phenomenal. All of the actors and actresses were so talented (except maybe Susan). I couldn’t peel my eyes away from the screen until I saw how it ended and my body physically reacted to the scenes. I truly felt that Ruth was evil and even looking at her picture and pasting it here in this post gives me the creeps; that’s how good it was.

IMDb Synopsis:

“Based on the Jack Ketchum novel of the same name, The Girl Next Door follows the unspeakable torture and abuses committed on a teenage girl in the care of her aunt…and the boys who witness and fail to report the crime.”

Inside (2016)

Webp.net-resizeimage (7)IMDb Rating: 5.9/10
My Rating:
3/5
Watch It On:
Hulu

My Review: What a creepy movie. The action started not even 20 minutes into it, which I appreciated– I don’t like slow-going movies and this was anything but. I was immediately engaged, curling my toes at all of the bumps in the night. I do think that things were a bit too drawn out though, like they added unnecessary scenes to tack on more minutes to the length of the movie. I usually don’t care if movies, shows, or books are “unbelievable” but, this one was really, really ridiculous. It was all gore, action, and suspense. Nothing else. It’s definitely a movie you won’t want to turn off but, at the end of it… you’ll be like “what the hell just happened?”.

IMDb Synopsis:

“A woman in her third trimester of pregnancy is stalked by a stranger who is obsessed with her unborn child.”

Almost Friends (2016)

almost-friendsIMDb Rating: 5.9/10
My Rating:
1/5
Watch It On:
Hulu

My Review: Almost Friends was one of those weirdo, awkward Indie flicks. Freddie Highmore starred in this film as his typical, strange self. The actress chosen for his love interest was super attractive but, really rather boring to watch. Everything moved very slow and their love story is not desirable or sweet whatsoever. We honestly DNF’d this movie, there were like 10 minutes left before we had to go somewhere… we can’t be bothered to waste our time with the ending though. We already saw pretty much how things unraveled.

IMDb Synopsis:

“Charlie is an unmotivated man in his mid 20s still living at home with his mother and stepfather who falls for a young woman who has a serious boyfriend.”

  1. I have never seen any of these movies but I’m intrigued. That prank call one sounds so interesting, I’m not going to lie, I’m still a bit of a sucker for a prank call, so immature I know but I just find them so amusing. So that film sounds super interesting I definitely want to watch it. The Girl Next Door sounds creepy but the perfect film for a scary film night with the girls. I’m going to have to suggest it. The story sounds horrific though, it’s so sad to think its based on a true story. The worst film I have ever seen based on true events is Wolfs Creek – have you seen it? Omg it’s horrific!

  2. Since you liked The Girl Next Door, I hope you’ll get around to watching An American Crime soon. As I mentioned in another post of yours, I like that one better and it has a great cast.
