The Beautiful Lie

1 Season, 6 Episodes
I watched it on:
Originally Aired on: The ABC Channel in Australia

IMDb Synopsis: Anna is happily married. She has the perfect family. But one man will change it all.

My Mini Review: This mini-series is based on the classic Anna Karenina written by Leo Tolstoy. I’ve never read it so I had no idea what I was in for when I started watching. To be honest, I was drawn to this show because of the synopsis but, was sucked all the way in when I heard their accents. I was also fascinated by the fact that it was a ‘mini-series’ with only 6 episodes– I watched them all in 2 days. Anna’s a retired professional tennis player and her husband is a current one, their child together is adorable. Her husband is a good man and a good father. Her brother is not… so, when he gets into a tiff with his wife he calls Anna to fly over and try to fix his marriage. Her husband stays behind and Anna meets someone on the plane there that’s connected to her brother. Inevitably, every one and every thing in this show gets tangled up in one way or another. Anna will make you so mad, you will not understand her decisions nor any of her actions unless you’ve been in the exact same boat. I loved all of the side characters and stories. I especially loved Kitty, even though she is the biggest brat. I am so happy with the way things turned out for her in the end. It’s a short series so I can’t say much without giving everything way. Just watch it.

On My Block

1 Season, 10 Episodes
I watched it on:
Originally Aired on: Netflix

IMDb Synopsis: A coming-of-age comedy about four bright, street-savvy friends navigating their way through high school in the gritty inner city of South Central Los Angeles.

My Mini Review: I cannot wait for season 2 of this show. Season 1 ends on the worst kind of cliffhanger. The four teens in this show have always been best friends. They’re entering high school in the beginning of the series and things are getting tough for them. Cesar’s relationship with Monse is the cutest but, not the easiest for them to maintain. I just adore a “forbidden love” trope. Cesar’s brother is the lead gang member on their block and no matter how much Cesar doesn’t want to be a part of it, he’s jumped in and his 3 friends go out of their way to try to save him. Their main goal is to graduate high school and get off that block all alive and together. This show is emotional and meaningful. It is both good for teenagers and adults.

13 Reasons Why

2 Seasons, 26 Episodes
I watched it on:
Originally Aired on: Netflix

IMDb Synopsis: Follows teenager Clay Jensen, in his quest to uncover the story behind his classmate and crush, Hannah, and her decision to end her life.

My Mini Review: This show is filled with drama and has caused even more drama in the real world. My opinion is that this is just a show and people shouldn’t be as angered as they are by it. Everything in this show is jaw-dropping and intense. It makes viewers want to keep watching, even if some of the content is horrifyingly inappropriate. There is no denying that people want to see MORE of this stuff and more of these characters. Each and every actor chosen for this series is super talented. They all play their roles so well. I personally think they all look a bit old to be in high school but, that matters none.

Clay is my favorite, he made me laugh so many times. Maybe even at times when things shouldn’t have been funny. It was hard to watch him fall apart throughout season 2 but, his emotions are always so strong, his passion to find justice for Hannah is powerful. Jessica bothered me in both seasons; her character is weak. There are so many times I wished for her to be tougher, same with Zach. They both had so much potential. I’m so unhappy with the cliffhanger at the end of season 2. I am really hoping for a 3rd season, there just NEEDS to be one now. I read an article on BuzzFeed that said that Hannah won’t be a part of the show anymore which I think is the right decision. Her story is over and done with. Her presence was annoying and creepy in season 2. I also want to mention how bad Hannah’s father is? Why didn’t he give a crap about anything? Anyways, I could go on and on about my feelings for each and every character… what I loved about them and hated about them. That’s how invested in this cast you’ll become. It’s a seriously addicting show.

The Carrie Diaries

2 Seasons, 26 Episodes
I watched it on: Netflix
Originally Aired on: The CW

IMDb Synopsis: Carrie Bradshaw is in her junior year of high school in the early 1980s. She asks her first questions about love, sex, friendship and family while navigating the worlds of high school and Manhattan.

My Mini Review: I haven’t watched AnnaSophia Robb in anything ever since A Bridge To Terabithia was in theaters. I fell in love with her in that film and I was excited to see her as the main character in this series. She is so cute and was absolutely perfect as Carrie Bradshaw! I wasn’t sure if I was going to like this show because I’ve only seen a few episodes here and there of Sex and the City but, I was still able to enjoy The Carrie Diaries thoroughly. It’s a light-hearted drama about highschoolers (mixed with a little innocent adult business) based in Castlebury, Connecticut which is so close to New York, they can just take the train into the city. I would get just as excited as they did every time they ventured into Manhattan– those were always my favorite episodes. I thought some of the actors and actresses were a bit amateur; especially Dorrit and Samantha. They were both beautiful but, their “bad-ass-ness” always seemed so incredibly fake, the actresses just didn’t pull it off well enough, luckily, both of them had strong story lines that kept me on my toes at all times. Larissa, Tom, LaDonna, and of course, Carrie were played by some real talent, they were always so believable and in-character. There was always something going on in this series that I wanted to continue watching it for, it wasn’t always so serious, yet, still fun and easily held my focus. It is a wonderfully mindless show and I completely enjoyed it. I also appreciated that it’s only 2 seasons and that the very last episode wrapped everyone’s story up nicely. I hate cliff-hanger finales and can never finish a 7 or 8+ season series anyways. I don’t think this really needs a 3rd season, I’m content with the way things ended. If people want to see Carrie’s future, I guess all they’ve gotta do is watch Sarah Jessica Parker play her in Sex and the City.

What series have you been binging on lately? Have you watched any of the same ones as I did? I’d love to hear your thoughts!

  1. I think I’ve only seen the first season of The Carrie Diaries and enjoyed it- might have to go back and watch the second. I’ve recently been switching between Jessica Jones and Netflix and Downtown Abby on Amazon Prime. Oh! And I binge watched the most recent seasons of New Girl and Unbreakable Kimmy Schmitt. I love both of those shows! I heard Orange is the New Black is coming out with a new season soon; can’t wait to see that one too, though I wasn’t that impressed with the last season.

I’ve heard so many good things about Jessica Jones. I’ll have to check it out soon! Same with Kimmy Schmitt & OITNB! I’ve not watched any of ’em yet. Thanks so much for your recommendations. ♡

    1. It was super interesting! I liked it a lot.

Hopefully Netflix adds the rest of the seasons for your show!! That’s so annoying when they don’t have ’em all.

  3. I am just getting close to being finished with Once Upon A Time and then I’ll be on the prowl again soonz I’ve never seen all these shows except 13 Reasons Why. I haven’t watched season 2 cause I didn’t feel a season 2 was needed but who knows? Maybe it’s good stuff

    1. It’s a really good show!! It’s a quick watch, too. If you ever get to it, I need to know what you think!!

The Carrie Diaries is VERY juvenile… lol. Like suitable for 12 year olds. I’ve never really watched Sex and the City!! But I kinda wanna see what it’s all about now that I’ve watched the Carrie Diaries.
