Play! By Sephora May 2018: Unboxing & Review

Oh wow, May’s bag was so not my style. It’s a mix between jeans and a tennis shoe? I have no idea what they were going for, really.

I thought the little comics on the back were so cute and definitely true! I’ve certainly learned a lot by subscribing to these beauty boxes. Except I’m still not great at the liquid eyeliner and I’ve never been to a Play! Date. Have any of you fellow subscribers been to one?!

What was in my box?!

Kat Von D – Tattoo Liner in Trooper

My Review: I’ll be adding this into my giveaway stash because me and eyeliner do not get along. I was excited to see the Kat Von D brand in my bag though. I really hope I’ll receive something else by her to try.

Drybar – Detox Dry Shampoo

“A fan-favorite dry shampoo that adds volume and absorbs dirt and oil between washes.” –via Sephora

My Review: I’m now a former hater of dry shampoo. I read Birchbox’s gif tutorial on how-to-use dry shampoo and followed the steps carefully. I actually did take a shower the day I tried this out but, my hair felt dry and a bit oily because I hadn’t shampooed in a few days.

At the first spray, boyfriend exclaimed that it smelled nice and he wasn’t even in the same room as me. I agree that it smelled nice but, I’m more sensitive to scents and I found it a bit strong and a little too long-lingering… it was fresh and similar to Dove’s original soap bar. I definitely prefer it over those super floraly or alcoholy scents.

I instantly felt my roots were drying out, the oiliness was lessening and my hair was feeling fluffy and soft within minutes. It seemed to flatten my hair instead of giving it volume like it said it would. It really helped untangle my strands and I was easily able to run my fingers through my hair. The next day when I showered, I could feel that my hair felt so much softer and lighter, it felt like I had freshly washed my hair with both shampoo and conditioner.

Marc Jacobs Beauty – Velvet Noir Major Volume Mascara in Noir

“A velvety, no-clump mascara that creates voluminous lashes with a unique, curvy brush.” –via Sephora

My Review: I hate hate HATED this mascara. It was super clumpy and wet. It was hard to evenly distribute with the crooked, weird bristles on their spider-legged wand. It’s not right that it gets fatter towards the end; it made it extremely hard to get the corners and ends of my lashes. It didn’t really create volume, instead, it pretty much just tried to clump all of my lashes together. Both the formula of the mascara and the wand were not for me– it is safe to say, I am not a fan. The dynamics of it is all wrong. It did last throughout the night, it didn’t leave any smudges nor any black flakes on my cheeks… I just hated the way it made my lashes look so none of the pros even matter.

Benefit Cosmetics – The POREfessional Face Primer

“An oil-free priming balm that minimizes the look of pores and controls shine all day.” –via Sephora

My Review: I thought the shade was going to be a bit too light for me but, luckily, it was just perfect. It blended into my skin nicely and left a smooth, even, and matte canvas for me to do my makeup on. I wasn’t fond of the perfumey scent and I thought the texture was odd, it looked gritty but, didn’t feel that way so it wasn’t really a problem. I do think it dries a bit too quickly and a lot of product is needed to completely cover your face. There were a few ways to use this primer but, I only tried it as a before makeup thing.

Yves Saint Laurent – Black Opium

“An intoxicating and invigorating blend featuring notes of high-energy coffee, seductive vanilla, and sweet white flower.” –via Sephora

My Review: Someone please help me. I have NO idea how to open this little guy. I’ll update this review if someone comments on this and gives me some detailed instructions on how to actually use it.

Sephora Collection – Mud Mask Purifying & Mattifying

“A detoxifying mud mask that clarifies skin with zinc and copper.” –via Sephora

wp-1528443517457..jpg

My Review: There was a floraly, perfumey scent to this mask. It wasn’t the worst but, would have been better if toned down. Luckily, this mask is ready to be wiped off super quickly so the scent doesn’t have enough time to cause a headache. Though, the smell does linger even after removing the mask. It goes from a dark grey to a ghostly white to signal that it’s done working on your face. I’ve not tried that many spreadable masks in the past but, I’ve tried a good enough amount to say that this was by the far the easiest one to spread across my skin and the only one that changes colors. It took a tiny amount of product to evenly coat my entire face, a little goes a long way– which is always a good thing. The mini beads kind of gave me the heebie jeebies, I hate the way they look… and they were annoyingly difficult to wipe off at the end. I accidentally opened my mouth during the wash, too, and I tasted poison… it was like when you accidentally talk immediately after spritzing yourself or the air with perfume. It wasn’t deadly and didn’t stay on my tongue too long but, it still bothered me for a second. I  did enjoy the refreshing, minty feeling this gave me while working its magic. As for the effects of it “magic,” I can’t actually confirm. I don’t know if it does everything that it claims because I’ve only used it once. It does say that my skin will feel softer and immediately after removing the mask, it did. I’ll use it again sometime as I don’t see that I’ve gotten any bad skin reactions from it.

Full-Size Retail Value: $20.00 (2.03 oz/60 mL)

I think there was a good variety of products in my box this month though there wasn’t anything I was that overly excited about. I noticed they repeat the same brands (and even products) a little too often– it gets boring. Come on! Let’s mix it up a bit, Play! box.

  1. They were going for an outdoorsy child sort of vibe!? I like that you have stated what’s cruelty free, very helpful for peeps. If your hand is steady enough, have you tried doing a really short, thick little flick upward? That’s the only thing that has ever looked right on me.

    1. LOL I think ‘outdoorsy child’ is the perfect way to describe this bag!! ;D

YES! I don’t want to a buy full-sized product that isn’t cruelty-free & I am hoping others wouldn’t either so I’m more than happy to include that part. 😉

My hand is not steady enough for any eyeliner especially after all of the espresso I drink. I used to spend hours with tape on my face trying to perfect wing liner so I am kind of traumatized by liquid liner now hahaha.

  2. Your lashes look long, but I agree – that mascara is too clumpy for my tastes. I always find clumpy mascara falls off during the day too and it’s damaging to my lashes when i try to take it off because i need SO MUCH remover xx

  3. Yeah, that mascara wand looks awful just from looking at it. I probably wouldn’t like it either. I love that Porefessional primer! It’s one of my favorites! I have large pores, and it really does help blur them and give my skin a smoother look.

    1. Doesn’t it? Ick I don’t know what they were thinkin’ with that wand.
The POREfessional primer wasn’t so bad, I’ve only used it once so far because I always forget to use primer. :/

  4. I’m sorry to hear that not all the products worked out for you as you’d hoped. I find that some dry shampoos really do make your hair flat which sucks because my hair needs fucking volume!! Lol
I got that mascara too but it’s unopened. If that’s how the wand looks like I will most likely hate it too ugh.
And yes, I agree, they need to change it up a bit, I’m getting tired of seeing the Sephora brand in my bags lmao.

    1. I guess that’s what we’re asking for with these sub boxes though, not everything will work for us that’s why they’re samples. 😉 I find a LOT of hair products that are for softening or cleansing my ALREADY way too flat ‘do LOL.
That IS how the wand looks, it’s horrible!! I wonder how you will feel about it. 😛 I’m sick of the Sephora brand too. Blah!

      1. Pretty much 😊 I’ve found lots of products that I really love though, so at least I’m discovering new brands and products.
Well I’m not looking forward to using it that’s for sure haha. Well see how it all turns out for me.

  5. I don’t even remember what I got in mine anymore but yours looks pretty good! (I mean, I guess I could check my post but soooo lazy right now haha!) I thought the bag was kinda cute though! It kind of reminded me of a picnic somehow?
