Birchbox | May 2018

Immediately when I opened the outer box, I knew there was something damaged inside because there was a super strong perfume scent wafting at me. I was nervous to open it and see what went wrong.

I have no idea what the design on the top of the box was… at first I thought they were ice cream cones but they definitely are not. I do like the light blue and yellow color scheme though, it’s cute and delicate.

I was totally right about there having been something damaged inside my box… it was all over everything!!

I was honestly more sad about the fact that the sample was nearly empty than the mess it made. Shampoo and conditioner are my favorite samples to receive!

What Was In My Box?!

Davines – OI Shampoo & OI Conditioner

“You’ll love this ultrahydrating, paraben- and sulfate-free shampoo for all hair types. It boosts volume and shine, improves texture, and protects hair from UV rays. This conditioner is packed with natural active ingredients like roucou oil, which protects hair from UV rays and heat damage, plus apricot butter, which adds softness to strands.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: The scent of this shampoo and conditioner is just a bit too strong for me. It smells like straight-up perfume maybe with a hint of a floral scent. It lasts for awhile in your hair, too. I got a whiff of it with every turn of my head. After washing out the shampoo and conditioner, I could instantly tell my hair was shinier even before it dried completely. It also felt softer the next day but the effects didn’t last long. It was dry and stringy again the day after.

Sunday Riley – C.E.O. Rapid Flash Brightening Serum

“This serum means business! It combines vitamins C and E, plus a blend of antioxidants to fade dark spots, tighten pores, and plump skin.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I’ve only used this once so far. It smells AMAZING, like you just peeled an orange and it’s sitting in front of you the whole time you’re applying this. The texture is thick like lotion and it feels that way, too. When you rub it into your skin, it’s not extremely greasy… it soaks in quick but, when it dries and you add your moisturizer on top (even one that’s usually never greasy) it becomes a bit heavy. I did see a brighter face in the mirror the next day. I’ve been meaning to use it again… and hopefully, again and again.

Cruelty-Free?: Yes

Davines – OI All in One Milk

“This nourishing leave-in treatment detangles while adding volume, shine, and heat protection.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: This has the exact same scent as their shampoo and conditioner. Like I said, it’s a bit strong but, it’s not bad or anything. I really like this stuff, so far. I’ve only used it once now and already, I’m seeing and feeling results! My hair is shinier, bouncier, and just all around… prettier! I never comb my hair when it’s wet because well, 1) I heard you’re not supposed and 2) it really hurts but, in the directions for this treatment it tells you to comb it through while it’s wet and WOW, it was the easiest time I’ve ever had with my wet hair. I’ll keep using this if it doesn’t all of a sudden make my hair greasy or dandruffy. It seems my hair only likes a product for so long before it reacts badly to it. We’ll see!!

Number 4™ – Jour d’Automne Sugar Texturizing Spray

“Rather than salt, this spritz uses sugar as a texturizing agent to achieve perfectly undone, soft beachy waves. Lightly spray onto damp dry strands, then style.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: They sent me another hairspray by this brand in a previous box that I kind of liked so I was excited to use this. I’ve only used it once so far but, I’m not loving the smell. I’m so sensitive to smells, I know… but this was waaaay too much for me. I didn’t notice any difference in my hair so I probably won’t make myself suffer through another day of drowning in the scent of this spray.

Benefit Cosmetics – Boi-ing Airbrush Concealer in No. 3 (Medium)

“A sheer to medium coverage concealer that doesn’t crease, cake, or crack. This longwear, waterproof formula blurs fine lines, brightens undereye circles, and evens out skin tone.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I was super excited to see this in my box! The packaging is so cute, I love the colors and fonts they used! The concealer itself was absolutely gorgeous and looked so perfect when I first opened it. Sadly, when I used it on my face, it felt too heavy and extra thick. It also didn’t provide as much coverage as I had hoped for and it’s a little darker than I prefer for a concealer. It was easy to blend into my skin and didn’t sit in the lines or pores of it though. I wouldn’t purchase this over my current concealer for under-eye circles but, I will use it to cover up blemishes and imperfections.

Full-Size Retail Value: $20
Cruelty-Free?: Yes (except where required by law- they sell to China)

Vita Liberata – Fabulous Self-Tanning Gradual Lotion

“Build your bronze with this fragrance free lotion that goes on clear and develops a natural looking tan in hours.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: Ummm… I’m already quite tan in the winter and I get really tan in the summer, naturally… by using the sun– I don’t need a tanning lotion. This is going in my giveaway box!!

Full-Size Retail Value: $30
Cruelty-Free?: Yes

    1. It was definitely interesting!! It’s supposed to work for all hair types but who knows how true that that claim is?! lol. Thanks for reading! ❤

    1. I feel like all the face creams they send me are expensive!! I don’t know who the heck they think I am lol I’ll just live off these samples & hope they keep sending me more before they run out!
My hair is not happy lately!! It’s been greasy and dandruffy!! Thank you though. ;D ❤ Do you just use plain argan oil??

      1. Hahaha! I really need something vitamin C and everyone is raving about Sunday Riley. I’m going to see if there’s something K-Beauty as an alternative. Sephora is carrying on with these prices and I already cant afford myself. We just got a Riley Rose store in our mall (thank god—I can find my May Coop Essence!).

When I wash my hair, I use the L.O.C. Method—leave in conditioner, (argan) oil, intense conditioner. If your hair is greasy and flaky, try a clarifying wash to balance your scalp’s ph and then go back to your normal conditioning hair treatment products. I pay for hair like yours, girl! 😍😍😍

        1. I want to try more K-Beauty products, too!! If you’re able to find something similar, lemme know. 😀 I’ve never heard of Riley Rose before?! I have to look it up now lol.
I just got back from looking it up on Google Images… is it Heaven?!?!
My hair is SO greasy and flaky. I need HELP. lol. What brand should I look for a clarifying shampoo from?!

          1. Yes, Riley Rose is heaven! 😂😂 They sell a bunch of K-beauty brands, Instagram brands (Sigma, Lime Crime, Coloured Raine, etc), stationary, candles, etc. My store has a neon wall so you can take the cutest photos for social media!

I would try Fekkai’s Apple cider vinegar shampoo. You can also make something yourself (apple cider vinegar is the key ingredient). Basically, this is a deep shampoo that is going to strip your hair of product buildup without leaving it dry. I wouldn’t use a clarifying shampoo daily, rather, as a reset once a month (or as needed). I really hope it works for you! ❤️

            1. OH MY GOSH. I really hope there will be a Riley Rose here someday!! It really sounds amazing.

Thanks so much for the recommendation!! I’m definitely gonna try that shampoo! ❤ ❤ You're the best!

  1. I want to try that brightening serum now. I just love the smell of orange! (Funny considering I don’t eat oranges, but I do like the smell of them. :P) One of my favorite products is the Origins Ginzing moisturizer, which smells like oranges too.

  2. Aw, I’m sorry there was damage in your box Hunida! That really sucks! I also loved a sample I got before of the Sunday Riley Serum, I was so sad when I finished it. And my hair curiously does the same thing. I can only use a product for so long before it decides it hates it and gets all greasy and dandruffy 24/7 too.

    1. Ah yeah, it was no biggie since it was considered a *bonus* item anyways! 😛 I love the scent of the Sunday Riley serum!

I wonder what is up with our scalps?! They seem really similar though. If you ever find a way to fix your, please, lemme know!! ❤

  3. That sucks the shampoo came damaged. Did you try to contact their customer service about it? And also, I’m. It at all familiar with most of these brands, I wonder if they’re smaller business. Except for benefit, that I’ve heard of. The only product I HAVE tried was the Sunday Riley brightening serum, which I got in my Sephora box sometime last year. I actually really loved it and I did notice a slight change to my complexion with continued use. I know that brand is sold on Sephora.

    1. I know!! I love shampoo samples. 😦 I was so sad, but I didn’t contact customer service because I don’t know why lol. I didn’t think they’d care?

The Davines hair products were all amazing! Especially the milk spray. I had never heard of any of the brands before, either (except Benefit yeah lol).

Everyone seems to love Sunday Riley, I had never heard of it before but I really love that serum. It smells so yummy!
