Birchbox March 2018: Unboxing & Review

Hey guys! I know I promised this post yesterday but I binge-watched Good Girls on Hulu instead, sorry! (It’s so funny, watch it if you get the chance.)

I know most people are trying to switch over to using cruelty-free products only (or at least, they should be) so I’ll be including whether the brand/product is or not from now on like Rossy does in her subscription box posts!

And now… for the moment you’ve all been waiting for!!:

I loved the design of this month’s box!! The light purple and the simple artwork are both so pretty and perfect for the Springtime!

On the postcard this month was a little note from the CEO and Co-Founder of Birchbox, Katia Beauchamp, regarding Women’s History Month. On the other side, was the list of samples in my box and a small description of each. I love that Birchbox includes this info on their postcard (unlike Ipsy).

What Was In My Box?!:

Benefit Cosmetics – Hoola Lite Matte Bronzer

“Sweep this lighter shade of the brand’s best-selling matte bronzer all over to add a subtle warmth to your complexion, or onto the hollows of your cheeks for definition.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: Um… this looks way too light for my skin. I haven’t used this on my face because I’m too scared. I might just give it away. How can I use a bronzer that is so much lighter than me?

Cruelty-Free?: No
Full-Size Retail Value: $29.00

Wilma Schumann Skin Care – Hydrating Collagen Eye Pads

“These pads are infused with pure collagen to hydrate, depuff, and plump the undereye area.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I thought these were super cool. I really liked how they felt, like jelly. They stuck on my face nicely and I was able to blog while I let them sit on my undereyes for 20 minutes. They stayed put and didn’t slide down at all. I didn’t even have to get up to wash my face. I just peeled them off, discarded the pads, continued blogging, and my skin felt nice and instantly dry. I was only given one package and after the one use… honestly, I really didn’t see a difference. I’ll admit I got this box too long ago and I was way too excited to try these so I used them right away… and now, I can’t remember how they smelled. I wanna say they had a nice, fresh scent? I know it didn’t bother me because if it had, I would definitely have remembered.

Cruelty-Free?: Yes – I couldn’t find any information on their website and the Bunny Free app couldn’t find the brand in their database but, I did some more research and on Skin Store I instant-messaged with an expert named Ellie who told me these are cruelty-free.

R + Co – TELEVISION Perfect Hair Shampoo & Conditioner

“Happy, healthy hair is a shower away thanks to this strengthening shampoo and conditioner duo which boosts body, shine, and softness.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: The best shampoo and conditioner I’ve ever tried was Alterna Haircare’s CAVIAR Moisture. I received it in my first Play! By Sephora box so from now on, I will be comparing all shampoos and conditioners to that. This stuff didn’t leave my hair shiny, super soft, nor bouncy the way Alterna did… but, it did leave it clean and dandruff-free which is good enough.

Cruelty-Free?: Yes
Full-Size Retail Value: $32

Winky Lux – Glazed Lips Donut Lip Gloss in Sugar Glaze

“Inspired by donut frosting, this pearl shimmery gloss looks (and smells) just as sweet. Wear alone or on top of a lip color for a multidimensional look.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I am not a fan. You need to use so much just to get a little sparkle and shine on your lips. It smelled like coconut sugar, not really like donuts or frosting. It wears off super quickly, too. You’d be reapplying constantly if you wanted to keep this look all day. At the first swipe, it goes on almost holographic, a super shiny, Unicorn-esque purple but then as you rub it in, all of the sprakles, shine, and color disappear.

Cruelty-Free?: Yes
Full-Size Retail Value: $15

Embryolisse – Lait-Crème Concentré (24-Hour Miracle Cream)

“A makeup artist fave, this French-born moisturizer combats dryness and preps skin for makeup application.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I am LOVING this moisturizer. It’s so light and easy to apply. Not at all sticky and it definitely does its job!! My face feels softer, smoother, and my makeup applies more evenly onto my face. It has that “old lady” lotion smell like Clinique, Lancôme, and Olay… it’s not super horrible or overpowering at all, though, and it fades away just as fast as it dries into my skin (which is nearly right away!).

Cruelty-Free?: Yes
Full-Size Retail Value: $16-$28

Oribe – Straight Away Smoothing Blowout Cream

“Get sleek, shiny hair without sacrificing body thanks to this styling balm that fights frizz and flyaways. Apply throughout damp hair, section-by-section, before blow-drying.” (via Birchbox)

My Review: I don’t even a own a blow-dryer so I’m gonna have to give this away, too. I was thinking I might do a little giveaway when/if I reach 1,000 followers.

Cruelty-Free?: Yes
Full-Size Retail Value: $44

I was still really happy with my box even though I wasn’t able to use 2 out of 6 of the items. I had a lot of fun testing out these products and I can’t wait for my April box! 🙂 If you’d like to start receiving this $10/month subscription box, you should use my link to sign up: https://www.birchbox.com/invite/4crjt!

  1. It’s a shame the donut lip gloss didn’t work out, I was having high hopes for it lol! But you’re so close to 1k you’ll reach it! You should do a giveaway I’m gonna be doing one too I’ve already been getting it prepared😉💖

    1. I was, too! It looked so pretty at first, lol. I don’t know what I’ll have in my giveaway besides these samples I can’t use but I wanna do something fun! Can’t wait to see what you’ve got prepared. 😀

      1. Hmmm, you could find some nice shops around Las Vegas, maybe places to get souvenirs or anything you like to include in it along with the samples. Maybe there’s something there that’s harder to get other places? Legal of course lol! Or Something involving food like gift cards to restaurants since you share a lot about food on your blog. You can even giveaway one of your whole monthly subscription boxes I’m sure people would love that lol.

    1. Right?! They really tried it! I kept staring at it trying to figure out for WHOM this color was actually formulated for and I kept coming up with nothin’. Hoola is doing a major PR push because all the top beauty babes are using it (but that’s not to say it’s good). Perhaps this can be used as a highlighter, lol???

      1. It’s not sparkly enough to be used as my highlighter but yeah maybe for someone else haha… have you watched the beauty babes use this in their videos?!

  2. I’m planning on doing a giveaway when I reach 1k too but that might take a while lmao.
And it sucks that the bronzer is too light and that lip gloss sucked. I love under eye gels, but there’s definitely some out there that don’t do shit lmao

    1. Ooh you’re so close, Rossy!! You’ll make it. 🙂 Can’t wait to see what you put together for your giveaway!
Yeah that lip gloss was lame! & Birchbox knows my skin color so I have no idea why they sent me that lol. I never tried an eye pad like this one before, my dark circles under my eyes are probably here to stay no matter what products I use to get rid of them. At least that’s how I’m starting to feel haha.

      1. I hope so, at least before the end of the year but I suck at networking my own blog 😦 LOL
One thing I’ve done that helped with my under eye circles was using my eye creams daily, both morning and night. I’ll even put some on before I apply my makeup. Also drinking a lot of water and getting enough sleep (I never get a good night sleep but still). All that has helped.

        1. Yeah… I don’t know how to do all the social media stuff! I just read and comment on the blogs I can find on my reader and certain tags. I’m not a huge “networker” lol.
Yeah, I guess I should try using something everyday instead of just once and saying it doesn’t work 😛 I drink so so much water and I think I sleep a lot, too…

          1. LOL I hardly do that because I just have so much on my plate. I really do want to try looking into other people’s blogs and I might do that next year. 🙂 365 Commenting 😀 LOL
Some products take a while to see a difference, that’s the thing about skincare. One day or two won’t do it, you have to test products out for like a week or two. But that’s great! I drink water but don’t get enough sleep LMAO

            1. I understand!! You do have a lot on your plate! I’m always lazing about browsing the web running out of content to read LOL.
Maybe you should start smoking weed again just before bed so you can sleep. 😉 And yeah, I’ll have to use skincare products more than once or twice haha I’m just like “ope, this doesn’t work, bye” lol.

              1. Lol I haven’t browsed in such a long time. And the only reason I haven’t smoked weed is because I may want to get a job and they all drug test lol. I can’t find a way or clothes in my closet where I’d be able to hide the kit and I don’t think I can be that dishonest to tell you the truth lol. But Alex keeps asking me every single time “you want some?” And “you’re not working anyway” lol

                1. Yeah if I could quit smoking weed, I’d be able to get a nice job at the casino but without weed I have high anxiety, no appetite, and have the hardest time sleeping. But I agree with Alex… most of the time you only have to quit for a month to get clean so maybe you could just smoke to help with your insomnia and quit when you find a job you want?

                  1. A casino job might be nice. What position would you like to work in?
Ah that makes sense, well if it helps you then it’s not that big of a deal. 🙂 I may try again, I do sleep much better when I smoke, LOL. But I do get the munchies but sooo hardcore and I want to stop snacking LOL

                    1. Hmm… I guess I’d like to be a waitress or hostess at a nice lounge, nightclub, or restaurant on The Strip.
I get the munchies, too! Haha I heard smoking weed helps you digest food faster though.

  3. The only thing similar we had in our box was the lip gloss, and mine was more of a pink! I liked the gloss, but you definitely have to keep applying it all day, which does suck. It sounds like you had some decent products, I’ve gotten that moisturizer before and it does feel nice on your skin, and you can use it as a primer I think?
